Children & Youth

Preschool–5th Grades

During the program year
Sunday mornings, 9:00-9:45

The preschool through 5th grade children will be using Deep Blue's One Room Sunday School curriculum for 2016-2017. The children will be all together in one group. We found having all the ages together during VBS worked very well. The children all learned from one another. We will begin in the sanctuary at 9:00 each Sunday morning for music, movement, and our DVD Bible story. At 9:15am we will move to the WNA space downstairs. The curriculum includes 3 areas we will be utilizing, which are the following:

  • Jump In — Arrival activities to help the children begin thinking about what they will be learning and group-building time to help the children relate to one another
  • Dive Deeper — Group activities for hearing, understanding, and experiencing the Bible story
  • Grow Stronger — Activities to encourage contemporary application to the children's lives, including opportunities to serve others in their own church

We will be using the curriculum for the months of September and October. In November and December, we will be rehearsing for the Christmas program.

Instead of collecting money for the Urbandale Food Pantry we will be collecting the monthly items they request. The children can bring items each Sunday. The Wednesday Night Alive group will be delivering the collected items one Wednesday of each month.

8th-12th graders (Emerging Adults)

During the program year
Sunday mornings, 11:15-Noon

The 8th-12th graders (Emerging Adults) meet after worship from 11:15 to Noon. They are guided by their teachers through units based on the big themes of Christian church life. Lessons use Bible study, film, drama, art, discussion, and other resources to explore ideas like worship, community, mission and stewardship.

Volunteers are always welcome to help with projects in Sunday School classrooms! Contact Rev. Amy Murray to learn about these opportunities.

Other educational events for children and youth occur during the week, such as Wednesday Night Alive.

Adult

During the program year
Sunday mornings, 9:00-9:45

Our Adult Spiritual Formation aims to spark some creativity and make room for the Holy Spirit to move us! This is an opportunity to develop and nurture the connection between our head, heart and hands.

We are looking for individuals who would be interested in leading a session or more. Materials are available that address a wide variety of topics from politics, environmentalism, feminism to devotions, building community and overcoming poverty. The opportunities are endless. Please contact Amy Murray, amy.murray@urbucc.org, with your interest.

Also offered throughout the year are other evening educational opportunities, retreats, and groups like the Book Group. Look for more information in The CALL and the Sunday bulletin. Education opportunities may also be offered as part of Wednesday Night Alive.
